Twilight
November 26, 2008
It has been so long since I last read a book and some days get so boring, I try to get myself distracted by doing random things. One gym night, I saw this movie trailer of “Twilight” but it wasn’t the trailer itself that captivated me but a part of it claimed that it’s the next big thing after Harry Potter. Since I was a Harry Potter fan from the very beginning and since I have been dying to find a new stuff to read, I got curious. Less than 24 hours later, I already have in my hands, all the four e-books of the Twilight series of Stephenie Meyer.

Twilight (Book One)
Twilight is a teenage-ish romantic love story with a fantasy twist, which progresses into more mature situations in the succeeding sequels. It’s about a girl (Bella) who falls in-love with a most unlikely creature in her imagination – a vampire (Edward), which because of that, has grown complications for both of their worlds.
I basically like how the story progresses into a more complicated scenario in the succeeding books. It starts out very simply showing a very simple life in the rainy town of Forks, advancing to night terrors, love triangles, loss, marriage and starting a family, all the while dealing with other parties who try to ruin an otherwise perfect life. The main characters are well introduced in the first books and there is much
history to tell, especially about the Cullens (Edward’s family). It has the classic good-triumphs-over-evil and love-conquers-all type of plot. What I like about it best is the mix of drama, comedy, a bit of adventure and action. The suspense gets me really agitated and even I could hardly stay awake anymore, I try to get through it.
However, this mix sometimes disappointed me. It has more drama than comedy, more “talk” than actual action. I think it’s a bit unbalanced. Although I’m generally happy about the plot and its progression, but it’s a bit too slow for me. The characters ask too many questions in their thoughts and they think too much. I sometimes find myself hardly believing that they did that in just a few seconds. Not that much realistic for me, conversation-wise, that is. The action and suspense does not come until at least you’re three-quarters way through.
The writing style is a bit different to me. The author relied on too many comparatives and lacked an accurate description of someone or something sometimes. I find myself hard to use my imagination on those times. I don’t know why some people think she’s the next JK Rowling, their writing style are completely different! Rowling puts in bits and pieces of clues in the chapters and finally combining them near the end that is central to the plot while Meyer puts in only one or two clues and the climax, most of the time, surprises you.
All in all, it’s a good read, especially for those who like fantasy and romantic novels. If you prefer to read it ahead before the movie comes out, let me know and I’ll give you a copy of the e-books I have. Or if not, well, watch the movie first and let me know anyway.

I like your review of Twilight, especially your thoughts on the writing style. I too believe that her writing is odd…I pictured fan fiction when I first read it.

thanks thevulgariannoise. Her style surprised me really maybe because there are too many narrations and I found that some of those are quite insignificant to the story. Nevertheless, I’m still happy that I read it.
